While my tribe here on this side of the world is in an uproar over one lost young woman and embroiled in a culture war, my heart is with you, mamas, that find yourselves lost in a world without your young in a true war war.
What we share in common as mothers, those heaving chests of pride and joy and fitful sleeps filled with the nightmares of what-ifs for our beloved children, was splintered apart as you woke to a living hell. While we tucked our dreams and secured our babes in bedtime sheets, you were burying yours in the same. As I celebrated milestones of another year alive for two of my own, your reality was a walk among tombstones and an inconceivable truth that even the foreboding what-ifs were yours to wonder no more.
What darkness covered as silent evil permeated the night one day will be brought to justice, you must know this. My eyes are on the world, on my government, to see what role they seek in administering it but my heart is set on heaven knowing where there is One who can right every wrong.
I believe in justice for Jesus' glory, not merely for judgement's sake. What man pays for crimes against humanity cannot salve the wounds of bitter unforgiveness that plagues the victim's heart. I believe in justice that comes as a sweet companion to usher peace in place of a suffocating anger that threatens madness. Vitriol was never balm sufficient in either of our worlds. I believe in a hope, for a different world now and for a more glorious future forever. "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven..."
While my newsfeed blazes aghast with horror, I want to share across the distance good news that can feed you hope. From a culture satiated with our declared rights to express our feminine sexuality, there are those of us content to express more loudly, more brazenly our expression of maternal strength that will stop at nothing to guard and protect the lives of our children and those of all mamas' children. From women such as this, I want you to know that we are together with you in that sacred sorority of maternity because a mother never truly ceases to be pregnant with child.
May our words and our prayers and our vigil, the signs of our wailing here, reach yours there and raise a harmony that is the shared mothers' song.
Written in support of mamas in Syria; a note of comfort during the aftermath of this.
